New commission: home pub sign

A home pub needs some branding or it’s just a shed or outdoor toilet (or both).

A trailblazing friend made the bold decision that if he couldn’t go to a pub right now then the pub must come to him. These are moments which warrant prestigious awards and grandiose parades atop a double decker bus.

The pub was by all accounts shaping up nicely but one important thing was missing; a sign. Possessing the craftsman skills of a penguin wearing oven gloves I clearly wasn’t the right person for making the physical sign but I was happy to help by providing the artwork that would appear on it.

The request was that the sign evoke the feeling of a ‘ye olde tavern’ style pub of days sadly long since passed. After playing around with several different designs I settled on a tried and tested ‘raising a toast’ image.

To help make that ‘olde’ aspect even more prominent I made the drinking vessels tankards rather than their more modern glass counterparts. Added above this image was the chosen name of the pub in a very nice free-to-use font I found online which I edited slightly and then – as no brewery owns this particular drinking establishment – the label ‘free house’ was added below.

With my artwork and the text compiled into one image I then inverted the colours which I think gives it a slightly chalk-on-blackboard appearance; again, in keeping with the ‘ye olde’ vibe.

What a welcoming sight

Happy with the completed design my friend then set about getting it wonderfully printed on a sign as well as on beer mats, a bottle opener and bar mat which gives an even better sense of identity for his pub.

A happy customer as indeed am I, especially when I’m able to accept his generous invitation to drink there!
