New commission: Seabear Brewery

Sprucing up the side of a fridge.

A friend of mine happens to be an EXCELLENT homebrewer and he has achieved this level of skill through many, many experimental brews. These brews are kegged and kept in a specially adapted fridge with nifty little beer taps on the front (these are visible in the photo below). Cool beer at the flick of a tap; in this heat that sounds extra special.

Fridges often aren’t very exciting to look at. Yes, you could try attaching items of lingerie or Y-fronts to it or perhaps some magnets from locations you’ve never actually been to. Failing that you’re left with a big bland-looking thing humming away in the corner. ‘Why not have a beer-themed poster on the most visible side of my fridge?’; this was the ingenuous idea of one jolly good chap, ‘Dave’.

After contacting me about the proposed artwork and providing an example of a homebrewing ‘meme’ currently doing the rounds I set to work recreating it using Dave’s very own ‘Seabear’ character. The origins of the Seabear name basically amount to someone quite hairy emerging from the sea on holiday and the uttered nickname then sticking (along with suntan lotion and sand). The memes generally consist of a series of pictures and text explaining what being a homebrewer actually involves versus what other people perceive it to be.

Each ‘panel’ can be seen below along with a photo of the poster in place shortly after Dave received it in the post (which should explain why it looks rather scroll like at the moment; he’s going to get a few more fridge magnets to place one in each corner).

I’m really pleased Dave is happy with the finished poster and it will now be the first thing people see upon entering his home.

The poster has also been added to my commissions page.

The Seabear character as Albert Einstein (white moustache, white hair, suit and looking generally very intelligent)
‘What my friends think I do’ (complicated equations to achieve the perfect brew)
The Seabear is handed a trophy for first prize
‘What I think I do’ (win First Prize at beer festivals)
The Seabear is in his laboratory mixing some strange liquids together
‘What society thinks I do’ (concoct ‘evil’ potions in my laboratory)
The Seabear is lying on a beach (with a sunset in the background); he's barely conscious after too many beers
‘What my parents think I do’ (lie around drunk after a few too many bottles)
The Seabear is wearing a purple apron and yellow rubber gloves as he stands before a kitchen sink with the bowl filled with plates and a glass
‘What I actually do’ (lots of washing up)
On the side of a fridge the poster is held in place using a magnet
Poster in place shortly after delivery (a few more magnets being added soon to flatten it out!)
